Naturopathic Support for Women's Hormonal Health

Hormones play a central role in many aspects of a woman’s health – influencing energy levels, mood, metabolism, reproductive health, sleep, skin health and overall wellbeing.

When hormones become imbalanced, women may experience symptoms that significantly impact their quality of life.

Naturopathy offers a comprehensive and personalised approach to supporting hormonal balance by identifying and addressing the underlying factors contributing to symptoms. Rather than simply masking symptoms, naturopathic care focuses on restoring balance within the body’s systems so that women can feel well again.

Common Women’s Hormonal Conditions

As a clinical naturopath, I support women experiencing a range of hormonal conditions, including:

  • Perimenopause and menopause symptoms
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Endometriosis
  • Hormonal acne

These conditions often involve complex interactions between hormones, metabolism, stress levels, nutrition and overall health.

Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance

Hormonal imbalance can present in many different ways depending on the individual and the life stage they are in.

Common symptoms I see women presenting with and seeking help for include:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods
  • Painful periods
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Premenstrual mood changes or anxiety
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Hormonal acne & other skin issues
  • Digestive symptoms such as bloating or IBS
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Weight fluctuations & inability to shift weight

A thorough health assessment helps identify the underlying contributors to these symptoms.

Understanding the Root Causes of Hormonal Imbalance

Hormonal conditions rarely have a single cause. Instead, symptoms often arise from a combination of physiological and lifestyle factors.

When working with women experiencing hormonal symptoms, I consider the full health picture including:

  • Past medical history & diagnoses
  • Stress levels and nervous system health
  • Diet quality
  • Gut health and digestion
  • Liver health & detoxification capacity
  • Environmental exposures
  • Metabolic health
  • Thyroid health
  • Use of birth control or hormone therapy

Understanding these factors helps identify what may be driving hormonal symptoms and enables more targeted treatment.

In some cases, functional testing may be recommended to better understand hormonal patterns and identify potential contributing factors such as gut health involvement, thyroid health, metabolic status and nutrient levels as some examples.

Supporting Women Through Different Life Stages

A woman’s hormonal needs change throughout life. Naturopathic care can provide support during key stages such as:

  • Puberty
  • Reproductive years
  • Fertility planning
  • Perimenopause
  • Menopause
  • Transitioning off birth control

By supporting hormonal health throughout these stages, women can maintain better long-term wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work with you if I am taking menopausal hormone therapy (MHT)?

Yes. Naturopathic care can work alongside menopausal hormone therapy (MHT). Many women combine both approaches to help support overall wellbeing and manage symptoms more effectively.

It is important that you inform me of any medications you are taking so that herbal and nutritional prescriptions can be selected safely.

Can I work with you if I am taking birth control?

Yes. Naturopathic support can be beneficial for women using hormonal contraception. Some forms of birth control may influence nutrient levels or contribute to certain symptoms, and naturopathic care can help support overall health while using these medications.

As with any treatment, it is important to inform me of medications so that interactions can be avoided.

How long does it take to see improvements in hormonal symptoms?

This varies depending on the individual and the complexity of the condition.

Some patients begin noticing improvements in energy, mood or period pain within 2–8 weeks. More complex hormonal conditions may require 3–6 months of consistent treatment as the endocrine system gradually rebalances.

Follow-up consultations are usually recommended approximately every 4 weeks initially to assess progress and adjust treatment where necessary.

Could Your Breast Implants Be Making You Sick?

Breast implants have been marketed for decades as a safe and long-lasting cosmetic procedure. This collection of symptoms has become known as Breast Implant Illness (BII). Although BII is not yet formally recognised by all medical

Histamine Intolerance – what is it and how can we treat it?

Most people associate histamine with seasonal allergies like runny noses, itchy eyes, and skin rashes. But this powerful molecule plays a much larger role in the body. Histamine is also involved in brain function, gastric acid secretion, immune signalling, and reproductive health. For some, however, histamine becomes a problem because the body can’t break it
